Double Face Tablet Weaving
Introduction:
Now that you have done some weaving you may want to try weaving in double face. Double face is a very cool technique that allows many patterns to be used, even on the same work. So without much more rambling of words, time to weave.
Preparing the Cards:
For the pattern we will be using you need to prepare 8 cards. With double face the pattern comes out from how you thread and rotate your cards. Unlike the last pattern this will go forward and back depending on what color needs to be shown. Cards for double face are generally SZSZSZSZSZ alternations.
Please thread the cards in the following style:
Card One, Red thread in hole A and B, White thread in hole C and D in a S thread.
Card Two, Red thread in hole A and B, White thread in hole C and D in a Z thread.
Card Three, Red thread in hole A and B, White thread in hole C and D in a S thread.
Card Four, Red thread in hole A and B, White thread in hole C and D in a Z thread.
Card Five, Red thread in hole A and B, White thread in hole C and D in a S thread.
Card Six, Red thread in hole A and B, White thread in hole C and D in a Z thread.
Card Seven, Red thread in hole A and B, White thread in hole C and D in a S thread.
Card Eight, Red thread in hole A and B, White thread in hole C and D in a Z thread.
As you notice, the red threads are all in the same holes in the entire deck, along with the white in the same holes in the entire deck. This is the key to double face and generally doesnt change unless otherwise specified.
Patterning:
This is the pattern we will be using, it will produce a pattern of endless figure 8's. On a double face pattern, they are essentially a graph, with no markings. But what they mean is the following:
Across the pattern is how many cards are required. In this case, 8 squares across represents 8 cards. In double face each square represents 2 turns, or half a full rotation of cards. A full rotation being what it takes for holes A and B to make it from the top, right round and back to the top (4 turns). So in the pattern each square down represents 2 turns (half a full rotation). To complete this pattern you will need to do 6 full turns (or 12 half full rotations).
Turning Sequences:
Some double face patterns come with turning sequences. I will display a turning sequence for this pattern so you can familiarise yourself with how the pattern works.
Once you have all the cards hung, tensioned and a weft thread tied in and ready to go, please do the following and refer to the pattern to watch it take shape.
Make sure holes A and B are at the top.
Step 1, Turn cards 1, 2 ,3 forward, cards 5 and 6 backwards, cards 7, 8 and 9 forwards.
Put through a weft.
Step 2, Turn cards 1, 2 ,3 forward, cards 5 and 6 backwards, cards 7, 8 and 9 forwards.
Put through a weft. (This completes the 1st square on the pattern, being one half full rotation).
Step 3, Turn cards 1 and 2 forward, cards 3, 4, 5 and 6 backwards, cards 7 and 8 forwards.
Put through a weft
Step 4, Turn cards 1 and 2 forward, cards 3, 4, 5 and 6 backwards, cards 7 and 8 forwards.
Put through a weft. (This completes the 2nd square on the pattern, being one half full rotation).
Step 5, Turn cards 1 forward, 2 and 3 backwards, 4 and 5 forwards, 6 and 7 backwards, 8 forwards.
Put through a weft.
Step 6, Turn cards 1 forward, 2 and 3 backwards, 4 and 5 forwards, 6 and 7 backwards, 8 forwards.
Put through a weft. (This completes the 3rd square on the pattern, being one half full rotation).
Step 7, Turn cards 1 forward, 2 and 3 backwards, 4 and 5 forwards, 6 and 7 backwards, 8 forwards.
Put through a weft.
Step 8, Turn cards 1 forward, 2 and 3 backwards, 4 and 5 forwards, 6 and 7 backwards, 8 forwards.
Put through a weft. (This completes the 4th square on the pattern, being one half full rotation).
Step 9, Turn cards 1 forward, 2 and 3 backwards, 4 and 5 forwards, 6 and 7 backwards, 8 forwards.
Put through a weft.
Step 10, Turn cards 1 forward, 2 and 3 backwards, 4 and 5 forwards, 6 and 7 backwards, 8 forwards.
Put through a weft. (This completes the 5th square on the pattern, being one half full rotation).
Step 11, Turn cards 1 and 2 forward, cards 3, 4, 5 and 6 backwards, cards 7 and 8 forwards.
Put through a weft.
Step 12, Turn cards 1 and 2 forward, cards 3, 4, 5 and 6 backwards, cards 7 and 8 forwards.
Put through a weft. (This completes the 6th square on the pattern, being one half full rotation).
Step 13, Turn cards 1, 2 ,3 forward, cards 5 and 6 backwards, cards 7, 8 and 9 forwards.
Put through a weft.
Step 14, Turn cards 1, 2 ,3 forward, cards 5 and 6 backwards, cards 7, 8 and 9 forwards.
Put through a weft. (This completes the 7th square on the pattern, being one half full rotation).
Step 15, Turn cards 1 and 2 forward, cards 3, 4, 5 and 6 backwards, cards 7 and 8 forwards.
Put through a weft
Step 16, Turn cards 1 and 2 forward, cards 3, 4, 5 and 6 backwards, cards 7 and 8 forwards.
Put through a weft. (This completes the 8th square on the pattern, being one half full rotation).
Step 17, Turn cards 1 forward, 2 and 3 backwards, 4 and 5 forwards, 6 and 7 backwards, 8 forwards.
Put through a weft.
Step 18, Turn cards 1 forward, 2 and 3 backwards, 4 and 5 forwards, 6 and 7 backwards, 8 forwards.
Put through a weft. (This completes the 9th square on the pattern, being one half full rotation).
Step 19, Turn cards 1 forward, 2 and 3 backwards, 4 and 5 forwards, 6 and 7 backwards, 8 forwards.
Put through a weft.
Step 20, Turn cards 1 forward, 2 and 3 backwards, 4 and 5 forwards, 6 and 7 backwards, 8 forwards.
Put through a weft. (This completes the 10th square on the pattern, being one half full rotation).
Step 21, Turn cards 1 forward, 2 and 3 backwards, 4 and 5 forwards, 6 and 7 backwards, 8 forwards.
Put through a weft.
Step 22, Turn cards 1 forward, 2 and 3 backwards, 4 and 5 forwards, 6 and 7 backwards, 8 forwards.
Put through a weft. (This completes the 11th square on the pattern, being one half full rotation).
Step 23, Turn cards 1 and 2 forward, cards 3, 4, 5 and 6 backwards, cards 7 and 8 forwards.
Put through a weft.
Step 24, Turn cards 1 and 2 forward, cards 3, 4, 5 and 6 backwards, cards 7 and 8 forwards.
Put through a weft. (This completes the 12th square on the pattern, being one half full rotation).
General Rule:
With holes A and B at the top (containing one color) and holes C and D at the bottom (containing another color), if you want the color in holes A and B rotate it forwards. If you want the color in holes C and D rotate it backwards. All this is doing is bringing the color desired forward to the front of the band and allowing it to be seen.
